Maddening instruction manuals

Great guide or maddening manual?

Did you get a lovely new electronic gadget this Christmas? Have you bought one in the January sales?

Was the manual a masterpiece of instruction or did you give up the will to live on the second page?

We want the best and the worst examples of instructions you have come across over the holidays. Please send them to info@plainenglish.co.uk and we will include the best examples in our next magazine.

As Ian Cook recently said in an email to us, 'I find that instruction manuals for electrical equipment are too often completely incomprehensible – particularly to the over 50s like me. Not only do I have to fight a battle to use new electrical or computer equipment but I also have to work out what is meant by the incomprehensible “user instructions” that accompany them.'
